Bolventor marks a lonely height upon the granite spine of Bodmin Moor, where the wind strips the air of all artifice. It lies 6.5 miles south-east of Camelford (from Camelford: bearing 131°T, OS grid SX 183 767), and is situated south-west of Trewint village. Dark clouds often bruise the horizon here, casting long, melancholic shadows across the gorse and the low-slung stone walls that define the perimeter of Bolventor. Travellers have long sought refuge at the Jamaica Inn's Daphne du Maurier & Smuggling Museum, a place that holds the hushed echoes of illicit trade and literary legend within its thick, protective masonry. Beyond the immediate reach of the road, the landscape rises toward the stony prominence of Catshole Tor, where the light turns thin and sharp against the grey sky. The earth here retains a wild, unyielding character, indifferent to the passage of seasons or the hurried transit of modern life. To the south, the deep waters of Dozmary Pool shimmer like a tarnished mirror, anchoring the mythology of the moor in a cold, impenetrable depth. This high country demands a certain fortitude, offering in return a vast, unfiltered silence that remains long after the traveller has departed.
