Boscastle spills down its steep valley towards the sea, a cluster of ancient stone buildings gathered around a natural harbour. It lies 6.9 km north of Camelford (from Camelford: bearing 353°T, OS grid SX 099 906), and is situated east-north-east of Trethevey village. The harbour, a shy inlet carved from the rugged north Cornish coast, has for centuries been the lifeblood of Boscastle, a place where fishing boats once bobbed and trade ships found a temporary haven. Sunlight, when it breaks through the often-brooding Cornish skies, seems to fall in broad, luminous swathes upon the slate roofs and the granite walls, lending a quiet dignity to the narrow lanes. The River Valency, a lively ribbon of water, rushes through the heart of Boscastle, its journey from the moors to the ocean marked by ancient stone bridges and the occasional flash of kingfisher. The air here carries a faint, briny tang, a constant reminder of the Atlantic's proximity and the raw, untamed beauty of this corner of England.
