About Breage

Breage commands the high ground of the Cornish peninsula, where the Atlantic light catches the granite lintels with a silver, sharpening intensity. It lies 2.7 miles west-north-west of Helston (from Helston: bearing 282°T, OS grid SW 617 285), and is situated east of Ashton village. Beneath the shifting clouds, the landscape retains the jagged memory of its mining past, seen in the skeletal silhouette of Watson’s Shaft Engine House standing watch over the northern fields. The earth here remembers the heavy labour of the tinners, whose excavations once defined the prosperity of the region. A short distance to the west, the ancient earthworks of the multi-period archaeological landscape on Tregonning Hill offer a quiet vantage point over the patchwork of fields stretching toward the sea. Breage derives much of its local character from this rugged, mineral-rich soil that resists the smoothing touch of modern cultivation. During the autumn months, the low sun casts long, skeletal shadows from the nearby ruins, marking the transition of the day with a peculiar, melancholic precision. The local church, dedicated to St Breaca, anchors the core of Breage, its sturdy masonry having weathered centuries of salt-laden gales.
