About Bugle

Bugle commands an expansive, elevated position amidst the stark, white-scarred geography of the china clay industry. It lies 4.0 miles north of St Austell (from St Austell: bearing 358°T, OS grid SX 015 588), and is situated north of Stenalees village. The landscape here is defined by the heavy, industrial legacy of extraction, where conical tips of waste stand like artificial mountains against the grey Cornish sky. To the south-west, the high mass of Hensbarrow Beacon asserts itself over the horizon, its rugged silhouette a reminder of the ancient, windswept character of the granite uplands. The light in Bugle possesses a peculiar, crystalline quality, reflecting off the pale silt that permeates the earth and lingers in the air after a dry spell. Nearby, the jagged, singular form of Roche Rock rises abruptly from the moor, its weathered crags holding the ruins of a medieval chapel that seems to defy the very gravity of the stone. This industrial theatre, where the earth has been turned inside out for the benefit of porcelain and paper, gives the surroundings a gravity that is both desolate and strangely compelling. Every turn of the road reveals the remnants of a working history, where the machinery of the past has left the ground fractured and raw. Bugle remains a testament to the endurance of those who carved a living from this challenging, mineral-rich terrain.
