Calstock clings to the Tamar Valley, a place where the river’s breath shapes the very air. It lies 7.4 km south-west of Tavistock (from Tavistock: bearing 216°T, OS grid SX 436 685), and is situated north-west of Bere Alston village. The steep incline of the land means that many of Calstock’s houses seem to tumble towards the water, their slate roofs catching the low Cornish sun. Once, this river carried the weight of industry, barges laden with ore and timber navigating its currents, a ghost of that past still hums in the quiet docks. The impressive railway viaduct, a grand stone arc, now stands as a monument to a different era, a silent sentinel overlooking the village and the ever-moving water below. Even the air here seems to possess a certain clarity, a sharp, clean scent that carries the tang of salt and the damp earth of the valley floor.
