About Freathy

Freathy commands a rugged, windswept ridge overlooking the Atlantic, where the salt-laden air carries the constant, rhythmic pulse of the tide against the cliffs. It lies 3.2 miles south-west of Torpoint (from Torpoint: bearing 229°T, OS grid SX 398 520), and is situated south-south-west of St John village. The ground beneath Freathy forms part of the Rame Head & Whitsand Bay SSSI, a landscape defined by exposed slate and the relentless carving of the sea. Below these heights, the wide expanse of Tregonhawke beach stretches out, its sands pale and shifting under the shifting moods of the Cornish sky. To the east, the remnants of the Whitsand Bay Practice Battery stand as silent, weathered sentinels watching over the shipping lanes. Winter storms here possess a singular ferocity, stripping the hillsides to their essential, stony bones while the light remains sharp and metallic. Freathy endures as a place of open horizons and exposed grandeur, where the land seems caught in a permanent, bracing dialogue with the ocean.
