About Golant

Golant clings to the verdant, steep slopes that rise sharply from the tidal reaches of the River Fowey. It lies 2.0 miles north of Fowey (from Fowey: bearing 351°T, OS grid SX 121 549), and is situated south-west of Lerryn village. The river here behaves like a broad, silver mirror, reflecting the shifting moods of the sky as it ebbs toward the sea. To the south-east, the quiet expanse of Hay Point offers a sanctuary for wading birds, their calls carrying clearly across the water on a still morning. Ancient echoes of conflict linger in the soil nearby, where the earthworks of Castle Dore remain as a silent, grassy ring upon the high ground. The architecture of Golant consists of stone cottages that seem to have grown from the hillside, their slate roofs catching the soft, bruised light of the Cornish afternoon. A short distance to the north-east, the skeletal remains of Ethy rock stand as a reminder of the slow, patient reclamation of the landscape by ivy and time. Life in Golant follows the gentle pulse of the tide, where the river dictates the rhythm of the day as much as the clock upon the mantle.
