Granite outcroppings and the insistent pull of the Bodmin Moor define the horizon around Henwood. It lies 5.5 miles north of Liskeard (from Liskeard: bearing 8°T, OS grid SX 265 733), and is situated north of Minions village. Sharp Tor rises sharply to the west-northwest, its rocky crown catching the bruised, Atlantic-fed light that shifts constantly across the high pasture. Below these heights, the landscape retains the quiet evidence of early human ambition in the form of the Neolithic Long Cairn, which rests silently upon the earth only a short distance to the north-northwest. The air here holds a thin, metallic clarity, a memory of the extractive industry that once pulsed through the nearby Phoenix United Mine. Henwood marks a boundary where the cultivated field gives way to the wilder, unyielding temper of the moorland. Winters bring a scouring wind that strips the gorse and leaves the stone walls looking brittle and absolute.
