Markwell remains a quiet collection of stone and slate holding fast against the damp, salt-laden winds that sweep in from the Cornish coast. It lies 3.7 miles west of Saltash (from Saltash: bearing 264°T, OS grid SX 369 584), and is situated east-north-east of St Germans village. The land here slopes away in long, bruised greens towards the Lynher Estuary Sssi, where the shifting tides pull at the mudflats with the rhythmic persistence of a slow, heavy breath. To the east, the rising shoulder of Berry Hill acts as a ragged sentinel, catching the pale, watery sun that illuminates the hedgerows in early spring. Markwell exists in the shadow of grander estates, yet it possesses its own austere dignity, defined by the narrow lanes that wind like veins through the fields. Just a short distance to the west, the ancient stone of Port Eliot keeps watch over the valley, casting a long, silent influence over the surrounding pastures. The air here carries the faint, sharp tang of brine, a reminder that the river and the sea are never truly distant from the hearths of the residents. Every boundary in Markwell is marked by the gnarled knuckles of hawthorn and blackthorn, which seem to hold the very geography of the parish in a firm, tangled embrace.
