Middle Town persists as a quiet cluster of dwellings upon the rugged, salt-sprayed landscape of St. Martin’s. It lies 3.7 miles north-north-east of Hugh Town (from Hugh Town: bearing 15°T, OS grid SV 920 161), and is situated west-north-west of Higher Town village. The Atlantic winds here carry a persistent, sharp clarity that scours the stone walls of every cottage, bleaching them to the colour of bleached bone. To the west, the slopes of Tinkler’s Hill rise abruptly, their granite flanks preserving the silent, circular outlines of a prehistoric cairn cemetery. Middle Town exists in a space where the earth feels thin, defined by the relentless rhythm of the tides rather than the ticking of a clock. Below the brow of the hill, the Old Kelp Pit remains a damp relic of an era when the islanders harvested the sea to nourish their thin, sandy soil. Sunlight strikes the surrounding grasslands with a cold, pale brilliance, illuminating the ancient field systems that still pattern the hillside. Residents of Middle Town look out toward the expanse of the Plains & Great Bay, where the water shifts through shades of bruised turquoise and slate grey.
