Polruan clings to the steep, slate-streaked cliffs of the Fowey estuary, where the salt-heavy air tastes of deep water and ancient maritime toil. It lies 0.4 miles south of Fowey (from Fowey: bearing 174°T, OS grid SX 126 509). The narrow, winding lanes of Polruan ascend sharply from the quay, offering a vertical perspective of the harbour where the light shifts constantly between bruised purple and brilliant silver. A short walk along the coastal path reveals the Polruan Blockhouse, a stone sentinel that once held a heavy chain across the river mouth to bar the entry of hostile ships. Beyond this ruin, the path leads toward the weathered stones of St Saviour's Chapel, where the ground falls away into the vast, open mouth of the English Channel. The horizon here is dominated by the expansive, shifting textures of the sea, which dictates the pace of life for the boatbuilders and sailors who call these heights home. Throughout the day, the sun catches the grey granite of the medieval wayside cross on Fore Street, a silent witness to the generations that have climbed these inclines. Polruan maintains a rugged, salt-bitten character that remains indifferent to the changing seasons, anchored firmly to the rock by its long history of seafaring.
