Poltesco holds the salt-rimed silence of a coastline where the Atlantic tides carve deep, green-shadowed indentations into the Cornish rock. It lies 8.3 miles south-south-east of Helston (from Helston: bearing 149°T, OS grid SW 724 157), and is situated south of Kuggar village. Where the land falls away into the Poltesco Valley, the air turns heavy with the scent of damp moss and the memory of industrious years. Crumbling stone walls mark the site of the Lizard Serpentine Works, where the dark, variegated rock was once polished into ornaments that gleamed with an inner, oily fire. Beyond these quiet ruins, the terrain rises toward the rugged expanse of The Lizard, a vast nature reserve where gorse and heather endure the relentless buffet of the wind. Poltesco remains a place of fractured stone and shifting water, caught between the gravity of the cliffs and the vast, indifferent blue of the sea. The stream that snakes toward the cove hums a low, persistent tune against the pebbles, indifferent to the passage of iron and steam that once defined this shore. Here, the light possesses a peculiar clarity, catching the sharp edges of the slate and turning the common earth into a mosaic of grey and gold.
