About Port Quin

Port Quin remains a sequestered inlet where the restless Atlantic salt air clings to the weathered stone of its few surviving cottages. It lies 4.5 miles north-east of Padstow (from Padstow: bearing 44°T, OS grid SW 969 804), and is situated west-north-west of Trelights village. Steep cliffs rise sharply on either side of the narrow cove, funnelling the wind into a rhythmic sigh that echoes the former toil of pilchard fishermen. The remnants of a once-thriving industry linger in the ruined Doyden Castle, a folly that stands guard over the headland like a silent, sentinel ghost. Only a short walk away, the rugged expanse of Lundy Bay offers a raw, unadorned beauty where the tide retreats to reveal jagged slate teeth. Port Quin bears the weight of its isolation with a quiet dignity, eschewing the clamour of modern harbours for the solitude of the deep, blue-green water. Beyond the harbour walls, the landscape stretches toward the horizon, where the light shifts with the passing clouds to cast fleeting shadows upon the ancient, grass-tufted slopes.
