It lies 4.0 miles west-south-west of Padstow (from Padstow: bearing 237°T, OS grid SW 861 721), and is situated south of Treyarnon village. The land drops away toward the sea in a sequence of verdant, wind-battered slopes that frame the deep sands of Porthcothan Beach. Here, the light possesses a peculiar, silver-edged clarity, illuminating the rhythmic rise and fall of the tide as it carves through the narrow entrance of the cove. Beyond the immediate shoreline, the terrain rises toward the ancient, weathered earthworks of the Three Promontory Forts, which stand silent against the relentless coastal gales. These remnants of older lives watch over the grazing livestock and the quiet, rolling fields that define the local agricultural character. Porthcothan remains defined by this interplay between the stubborn, resilient rock and the soft, shifting currents of the ocean.
