About Portloe

Portloe clings to the rugged Cornish coast, a small harbour village where the sea's salt air is a constant companion. It lies 12.3 km east-south-east of Truro (from Truro: bearing 111°T, OS grid SW 939 398), and is situated east of Veryan Green village. The steep incline of the land dictates the very layout of Portloe, with cottages tumbling down towards the sheltered cove, their slate roofs catching the mercurial Cornish light. Once a vital hub for pilchard fishing, the harbour’s stone quays, worn smooth by generations of boats and boots, still speak of that industrious past. Even now, the cry of gulls overhead seems to echo the calls of fishermen from days gone by, a timeless melody against the ceaseless murmur of the waves. The narrow lanes, barely wide enough for a single car, encourage a slower pace, a gentle yielding to the sea's dominion.
