St Lawrence breathes a quiet Cornish air, a place where the land slopes gently towards unseen waters. It lies 2.6 km west-south-west of Bodmin (from Bodmin: bearing 250°T, OS grid SX 047 662), and is situated south of Dunmere village. The hedgerows here, thick with hawthorn and bramble, seem to hold the secrets of generations, their branches a tangle against the ever-changing Cornish light. Though small, St Lawrence carries a sense of enduring presence, its houses clustered as if for warmth against the open sky. The fields surrounding St Lawrence, a patchwork of greens and golds under the sun, speak of a long and patient agricultural heritage. There is a stillness here, a quality that allows the subtle sounds of the countryside – the distant bleating of sheep, the rustle of leaves – to become acutely audible.
