Traboe holds a quiet gravity upon the exposed, wind-swept expanse of the Lizard Peninsula. It lies 6.5 miles south-east of Helston (from Helston: bearing 124°T, OS grid SW 743 211), and is situated south-south-east of St Martin village. The horizon here is vast and stripped of artifice, dominated by the low, scrubby heathland that stretches towards the coast. Ancient silence clings to the earth, marked by the presence of a round barrow 400 yards north-west of Traboe Cross, where the soil holds the memory of those who walked these paths millennia ago. Further west, the landscape deepens into the dark, reflective waters of Croft Pascoe Pool, which mirror the shifting grey clouds of the Cornish sky. Traboe remains a place where the Atlantic breeze carries the salt of the sea across a terrain shaped by granite and gorse. The light in this corner of England is sharp and clarifying, casting long, thin shadows that stretch across the fields as the day wanes. Life in Traboe moves in accordance with the turning of the seasons, far from the frantic pace of the larger market towns.
