Granite outcrops and the salt-bitten gorse of the Penwith peninsula define the rugged horizon surrounding Treen. It lies 5.1 miles north-north-west of Penzance (from Penzance: bearing 332°T, OS grid SW 435 377), and is situated north-north-west of Madron village. Here, the Atlantic wind carries a sharp, metallic clarity that scours the earth and keeps the vegetation low and resilient against the sky. A short distance to the north-north-west, the stone remains of the medieval chapel called Chapel Jane offer a silent, weathered shelter for those walking the exposed coastal paths. The landscape around Treen holds its history in the heavy, unworked boulders that litter the fields, remnants of a time when human presence was measured by the stacking of dry stone. Just south of the hamlet, the Chambered Barrow Sse Of Treen marks a deeper, archaic memory buried beneath the bracken and the shifting light of the West Country. Treen remains a place where the geological weight of the earth feels absolute, pressing upwards through the thin soil to meet the restless, grey-blue expanse of the ocean.
