Trewoon carries the heavy, chalky imprint of Cornwall’s industrial past, where the land itself seems to have been turned inside out by the extraction of china clay. It lies 1.2 miles west of St Austell (from St Austell: bearing 276°T, OS grid SW 995 527), and is situated east of Hornick village. The horizon here is dominated by the stark, conical tips of white spoil heaps, which rise like frozen, jagged ghosts against the shifting Atlantic clouds. To the north, the Gover Valley carves a deep, verdant vein through the earth, offering a sudden, lush contrast to the scarred heights that define the skyline. The water of the nearby Gover Stream runs cold and clear, cutting through the silence of the woods with a persistent, metallic hum. Trewoon retains a grit born of long labour, where the light hits the pallid dust of the roadside, making the entire landscape glow with a strange, lunar brightness. Visitors often pass through quickly, unaware of the ancient, moss-slicked stones of Menacuddle Well tucked away in the quietude of the nearby foliage. It is a place of hard edges and sudden, hidden softness, where the industrial legacy of the pits continues to shape the very bones of the terrain.
