It lies 2.6 miles north-north-east of Wickford (from Wickford: bearing 15°T, OS grid TQ 755 976), and is situated east of South Hanningfield village. Winter light here has a sharp, pale quality, catching the frost on the hedgerows before the sun slips behind the distant, shadowed rise of Curry Hill. The landscape is defined by a slow, heavy fertility that has long sustained the local agricultural rhythm. To the west, the expansive waters of Hanningfield Reservoir temper the air, drawing flocks of migratory birds that trace silver lines across the grey horizon. Coalhill remains largely untouched by the frenetic pace of nearby arterial roads, favouring instead the muted sounds of wind moving through tall, unpruned hawthorn.
