It lies 5.3 miles south-west of Colchester (from Colchester: bearing 220°T, OS grid TL 944 184), and is situated south of Birch Green village. Low-hanging light often clings to the fields here, turning the winter grasses into a pale, bruised silver that stretches toward the horizon. To the west, the Tudor brickwork of Layer Marney Tower rises with an incongruous, jagged grandeur, casting long shadows over the surrounding nine hectares of historic parkland.
