How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Gaillard

Gaillard rests in the shadow of the mountains, a place where the landscape shifts from the lowland rhythm of l'Arve to the rugged presence of les Voirons. Nearby, the blue expanse of le Léman anchors the horizon, while the towering form of Mont Salève defines the skyline. The air here holds the crisp, thin quality of high country, suggesting the proximity of glaciers and the seasonal music of transhumance. It is a territory of shifting light, where the mountain's shadow crawls across the valley floor, bridging the gap between urban life and the wild, stony heights that define this region.

This commune serves as a quiet threshold, deeply connected to its surroundings. Beyond the immediate reach of the town, the Bois de Vernaz offers a dense, green sanctuary, while the wider landscape bears the mark of the Chablais Géoparc Mondial UNESCO. Life here is shaped by its position near the frontier, a place of movement and transition. While modern life flows through its streets, the memory of the landscape remains, grounded in the ancient geologic shifts of the earth and the cool, rushing water of the river that flows close by.

Culturally, the town holds its history in quiet, physical markers. The Église Saint-Pierre stands as a focal point of the community, while the Château de Gaillard speaks to a more storied past. For those seeking the outdoors, the Voie Verte du Grand Genève provides a passage through the landscape, linking the town to the broader rhythm of the valley. Nearby, the Château de Choully offers a glimpse of regional architecture, and the Pierre de l’octroi remains a stubborn reminder of the town’s historical role as a gateway, standing firm amidst the changing tides of the borderlands.
