How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Dijon

Dijon rests within the heart of the Côte-d'Or, a landscape defined by limestone escarpments and the quiet flow of the Suzon. Beyond the urban edge, the horizon is traced by the silhouette of Mont Afrique and the hidden depth of the Grotte de Neuvon. The wider countryside breathes with the damp autumn mist of the valleys, while the proximity of the Aire d'Adhésion du Parc National de Forêts reminds the visitor of the ancient woods that anchor this region. It is a place where the earth itself feels old, marked by the proximity of Lac Kir and the distant, rolling vine-lined côtes.

Historically, Dijon evolved from a Roman castrum into the majestic capital of the Dukes of Burgundy. During the late Middle Ages, the city flourished as a ducal seat of immense power, fostering an era of artistic brilliance. Its architecture reflects this legacy of governance and spiritual devotion, serving as a bishopric that anchored the social fabric of the territory. The stone walls and urban layout preserve a narrative of political weight, shifting from the defensive requirements of a medieval town to the refined administrative center that commanded the Burgundian state for centuries.

Today, the city serves as the administrative and economic engine of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It balances its role as a regional capital with a commitment to preserving the heritage of the past, standing as a hub where agricultural traditions meet modern governance. The presence of the Palais des ducs et des États de Bourgogne remains the symbolic center of this vitality, while the city's streets sustain a lively commerce that reflects the industrious spirit of the surrounding department. It is a place of steady growth, anchored by its historic identity and its function as a crossroads for the broader French interior.

Culture here is articulated through stone and shadow. The Église Notre-Dame de Dijon stands as a masterpiece of Gothic design, while the Tour Philippe le Bon offers a panoramic vantage point over the city's characteristic tiled polychrome roofs. Within the Palais des ducs et des États de Bourgogne, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon holds treasures that speak to the artistic ambition of the ducal court. Visitors often find solace in the Jardin botanique de l'Arquebuse or walk the grand expanse of the Place de la Libération, where the city's history feels most immediate and resonant.
