How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Val-de-Vesle

Val-de-Vesle rests within a landscape defined by the quiet persistence of chalk and the expansive, open character of the cereal plains. The river la Prosne flows nearby, tracing a slow path through a terrain that feels ancient and reserved, while the nearby Bois de Courmelois offers a dense, sheltering presence against the horizon. To the south, the Parc Naturel Régional de la Montagne de Reims rises as a gentle, vine-combed boundary, suggesting a different rhythm of life where the earth is sculpted by generations of patience.

Exploring the wider countryside reveals the lingering, still air of the 1914-18 battlefields, a presence felt most acutely at the somber Borne Vauthier. Further afield, the landscape is punctuated by the silhouette of the Phare de Verzenay, which stands as a silent sentinel over the surrounding vineyards. Travelers may also encounter the imposing Fort de la Pompelle, a testament to the region’s enduring history, or find the ruins of the village détruit of Moronvilliers, where the earth holds the memory of a landscape irrevocably altered by conflict.
