Mercy-le-Bas s'étire sur le plateau de Meurthe-et-Moselle, un paysage marqué par la terre ferrugineuse et les villages-rues qui épousent le relief de la cuesta. Le Bois du Four vient frôler les champs, tandis que la Piennes trace son chemin dans la vallée voisine. C'est un pays de pierre ocre et de terre profonde, dominé par le Haut de Moncelle qui veille sur la commune. L'horizon porte encore le souvenir des mines et des forges, une empreinte industrielle désormais apaisée par la proximité du Parc Naturel Régional de Lorraine qui s'étend dans la campagne environnante.
