How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Chavenay

Chavenay rests within the quiet expanse of the Plaine du Trou d'Enfer, a landscape defined by its open horizons and the gentle presence of the Bois de Saint-Fiacre. Nearby, the Ru de Gally traces its path through the fields, a modest waterway that speaks to the deeper rhythm of the Yvelines region. Beyond the village, the land rolls toward the Rougemont summit, while the proximity of the Étang de Saint-Quentin and the broader reach of the Parc Naturel Régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse frame the area in a tapestry of protected nature. It is a place where the light catches the limestone and plaster of local walls, echoing the quietude of the surrounding plains.

A visitor exploring the vicinity finds traces of a storied past embedded in the landscape. The Château de Grignon stands as a silent witness to time, its architecture offering a stark silhouette against the sky, while the Pavillon de l'Arènes remains a curious monument to past elegance. Wanderings toward the Château de Wideville reveal the enduring grace of stone and garden, and the Vestiges du Château de Retz provide a somber, evocative reminder of structures lost to the elements. These sites, scattered across the local geography, invite a slow contemplation of the history held within the soil of this corner of the Île-de-France.
