How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Saint-Varent

Saint-Varent sits firmly within the Plaine des Vaux Roux, a landscape defined by the quiet persistence of limestone and the gentle influence of the nearby le Thouaret. This is a region of soft horizons and quiet agricultural rhythms, where the Bois des Sablons offers a shadowed respite from the expansive sky. The surrounding countryside reveals itself in subtle shifts of terrain, leading toward the more distant heights of the Butte de Moncoué. Water is a constant, if understated, companion, with the larger le Thouet carving its path through the wider territory.

Travelers moving outward from the village will encounter a landscape rich in stone and history. The Château de Marsay stands as a testament to the enduring presence of architectural heritage in these lands, while the Château de Glenay evokes the quiet nobility of the local terrain. Further afield, the Église Abbatiale Saint-Pierre invites a contemplative pause, its structure reflecting the deep roots of the region. Nearby, the majestic Château d'Airvault remains a landmark of strength, grounding the visitor in a history that feels both ancient and deeply connected to the earth itself.
