How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Carbon-Blanc

Carbon-Blanc sits in the quiet transition between the urban sprawl of the Gironde and the wider Nouvelle-Aquitaine countryside. The landscape here feels shaped by the proximity of the Bassin de la Dordogne, where the damp warmth of the river valleys meets the tall, shifting skies of the southwest. Nearby, le Gua traces a path through the fields, while the influence of the Bay of Biscay is felt in the air, though the commune remains firmly inland. The terrain is defined by the gentle rhythms of a region where vines are planted in strict rows on gravel, and the horizon is often punctuated by the dark silhouette of maritime pines.

Life in the commune reflects a balance between residential quiet and the proximity of busier centres like Bassens or Lormont. The economy is modest and rooted in its local surroundings, drawing on a history tied to the land. Residents move between the intimacy of the town and the vast, open spaces that define this part of France, where the scent of walnut and the memory of traditional agriculture linger in the atmosphere. It is a place that does not demand attention, but rather rewards those who notice the subtle textures of the gravel paths and the quietude of the local streets.

Culture in Carbon-Blanc is anchored by the Centre Culturel Favols, a hub for local artistic life that stands in contrast to the historical weight of the region. Nearby, the Château Duguet serves as a reminder of the commune's deeper past, while the Château du Prince Noir stands as a silent sentinel in the wider landscape. Further afield, the Base Sous-Marine de Bordeaux offers a stark, concrete reflection on the twentieth century, and the Ermitage Sainte-Catherine provides a moment of stillness amidst the ruins. These sites, ranging from the contemporary arts centre to the skeletal remains of the past, define the character of the commune.
