How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Albi

Albi sits nestled within the embrace of the Tarn, a city defined by the presence of the major river that carves through the landscape. The horizon is shaped by the gentle rise of the Puech Rouge, while the wider countryside features rolling hills that once yielded wheat and sunflowers. Beyond the town, the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut Languedoc offers a vast expanse of natural beauty, contrasting with the refined urbanity of the city. The heat of the day often brings the rhythmic hum of cicadas, a testament to the dry, sun-drenched climate that defines this corner of the Occitanie region.

Historically, Albi evolved from a modest Roman settlement into a formidable bishopric of profound religious influence. Its architecture tells a story of power, particularly through the imposing presence of the Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile d'Albi, a masterpiece of brick construction that dominates the skyline. This seat of ecclesiastical authority once held significant sway, serving as a bastion of faith and governance. The enduring legacy of these past centuries remains etched into the very stones of the city, reflecting a time when bishops and local lords shaped the destiny of the region through monumental building projects.

The economy of Albi has long been tied to its role as a regional nexus, benefiting from its position along the river. While it serves as an administrative heart for the Tarn department, the city balances its civic duties with a deep appreciation for its artisan roots. The brick and pink terracotta facades of the historic center provide a warm, tactile backdrop for daily commerce. Nearby, the landscape remains dotted with traditional pigeonniers, reminding visitors that the prosperity of the city is inextricably linked to the agricultural traditions of the surrounding plains.

Culturally, the city is a treasure trove of art and history, anchored by the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, which celebrates the life and work of its most famous son. Walking through the Place du Vigan, one feels the pulse of local life, where history meets the contemporary spirit of the town. The Palais de la Berbie stands as a witness to centuries of prestige, while the tranquil gardens of the Parc Rochegude invite quiet reflection. The Maison du Vieil Alby offers a glimpse into the domestic heritage of the area, ensuring that the legacy of the past remains vibrant and accessible to all.
