How to Use This Map / Mode d'emploi

Use the Map and Satellite buttons to switch between the street map and aerial imagery, and the + and − buttons to zoom. Click ⛶ Fullscreen for a larger view; press Escape or tap ✕ Exit Fullscreen to return.

OFFICIAL FRENCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button opens a second map with three base layers: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Plan IGN — France's official national map from the Institut national de l'information géographique et forestière — and Photos, the IGN's aerial photography. Two overlays go over any of them: Contours, the IGN's contour lines, and Relief, hillshading from the RGE ALTI one-metre terrain model. The search box finds any place in France or beyond by name.

Click Grid to overlay the UTM grid — one-kilometre squares at normal zoom. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance plus the grid, true and magnetic bearing.

📍 My position takes a single GPS reading and shows it as an MGRS reference, as plain UTM, as Lambert-93 (the French national grid, EPSG:2154) and as latitude and longitude, with a Copy position button. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not.

Mode d'emploi.

About Carmaux

Carmaux rests in the heart of the Tarn, a landscape defined by rolling hills where fields of wheat stretch toward the horizon. The river le Céroc meanders through this terrain, while the broader waters of le Tarn flow through distant gorges. Nearby, the Retenue de la Roucarié offers a quiet expanse of water, reflecting the shifting light of the region. On the distant skyline, the summit of Puy Saint-Georges serves as a silent sentinel, watching over a land marked by the legacy of stone and the gentle, rugged beauty of the Occitanie landscape.

Historically rooted in industry, the town has evolved into a place of quiet transition. Life here revolves around the rhythm of the seasons, where the dry heat of midday is punctuated by the persistent song of cicadas. The surrounding countryside, encompassing hamlets like la Daydonié and la Raffenelié, retains a sense of enduring connection to the earth. It is a region where the architecture of brick and terracotta speaks to a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship and resilience in the face of the changing modern world.

Culture in Carmaux is anchored by institutions that celebrate both history and creative expression. The Musée du Verre honors the town's artisanal heritage, preserving the delicate artistry of glasswork, while Cap'Découverte transforms former industrial sites into a space for contemporary leisure. For those seeking reflection, the Centre culturel Jean-Baptiste Calvignac provides a hub for local arts, echoing the spirit of the community. Nearby, the Château de Saint-Hippolyte stands as a reminder of the region's enduring past, and the Théâtre de Verdure offers a stage under the open sky for shared experiences.
