Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Calabria spans from the pine plateaus of the Sila to the sharp ravines of the Aspromonte, flanked by two seas visible from a single ridge. The Ionian shore carries the scent of bergamot groves, while inland, the dry fiumare beds wait for the sudden floods of autumn. Cities like Reggio di Calabria look toward the strait, where the Arena dello Stretto Ciccio Franco and the Aragonese Castle mark the edge of the land. In Catanzaro, the Parco Archeologico di Scolacium remains a silent witness to the earth, while the Museo delle Arti di Catanzaro holds the modern pulse of the region.
The character of the land is defined by a hard, bright light that makes every stone distinct. In the Bovesia, the sound of Greek survives in the speech of the inhabitants, a quiet endurance against the erosion of the hills. The regional economy relies on the stubborn fruit of the soil and the rhythm of the seasons, where chilli is harvested under a relentless sun. Towns like Corigliano-Rossano preserve the Abbazia di Santa Maria del Patire and the Museo della Liquirizia Giorgio Amarelli, grounding the daily life of the residents in the physical labor of the past.
History here is a sequence of occupations and shifts, transitioning from a Greek colony to a Roman province, later becoming a frontier fought over by shifting powers. The landscape is marked by the presence of Norman castles, such as the Castello Normanno Svevo di Lamezia Terme, which define the heights above the valley. In the cities, the Cattedrale di Maria Santissima Assunta in Reggio di Calabria and the Cattedrale dei Santi Pietro e Paolo in Lamezia Terme serve as the centers of civic existence, where the morning bells dictate the pace of the streets.
The unification of Italy brought changes that altered the social fabric, leaving behind a legacy of emigration and difficult economic adjustments. Despite these pressures, the regional identity remains anchored to the specific textures of its geography, from the interior mountains to the coastal plains. Buildings like the Chiesa degli Ottimati and the Museo Archeologico Lametino provide a necessary link to the eras that shaped the current reality. Residents move through the piazzas of Rende or Castrovillari with a familiarity that ignores the weight of history, focusing instead on the immediate needs of the present day.

Explore Calabria, Italy, Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 38.9574, 16.2837. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to each of the 5 province of the region and to 2,533 place maps.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
