Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Capri occupies a singular position, rising from the sea within the province of Napoli in the Campania region. The land is defined by the summit of Monte Tuoro, while the distant silhouettes of Vesuvio and Monte Epomeo anchor the horizon. Below, the landscape includes the natural expanse of the Area Naturale Marina Protetta Punta Campanella. The air carries a distinct salt-laden quality that shifts as one moves toward the inland slopes, where the earth feels firm underfoot. Near the neighbouring village of Anacapri, the terrain reveals the rugged character of the island, shaped by the elements and the proximity of the sea.
The history of Capri is anchored in its Roman period, when it served as a site of imperial residence and retreat. Following the decline of Roman authority, the island underwent periods of shifting control, including phases under Lombard and Norman influence. It transitioned through roles as a maritime hub, eventually evolving into a stable comune. Unlike the larger cities on the mainland, the island maintained a distinct isolation that protected its administrative structure, allowing it to preserve its identity through the centuries while watching the changing political tides of the region.
Historically, the economy of the island relied upon maritime trade and local agriculture, sustained by the steep, rocky soil. This environment fostered a culture of resilience, where the movement of goods and people was dictated by the currents and the seasonal shifts of the Mediterranean. Today, the role of the comune is defined by its preservation of natural and historical assets, managing the influx of visitors who seek the light and the vistas that have long drawn observers to these shores. The daily rhythm is slow, dictated by the ferry arrivals and the quietude of the evening.
The culture of Capri is expressed through its landmarks, such as the Piazzetta di Capri, which serves as the social heart of the town. The Faraglioni di Capri rise dramatically from the water, while the Grotta Azzurra offers a play of light that remains unparalleled. One might wander through the Giardini di Augusto, looking out over the cliffs, or visit the ruins of Villa Jovis to consider the scale of past architecture. The Certosa di San Giacomo provides a quieter reflection, and the Faro di Punta Carena marks the edge of the island, watching over the deep water.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
