Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Amalfi clings to the coastal edge of the province of Salerno, caught between the salt air of the Mediterranean and the rugged slopes of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari. Above the town, the silhouette of Monte Scorca rises sharply, while the Fiume Canneto carves a path through the stone, feeding the lower valleys. This landscape is defined by the proximity of the Riserva Naturale Valle delle Ferriere, where the air cools under the dense canopy of ancient trees. The light here is sharp and clear, reflecting off the water to illuminate the white stone of the town’s vertical architecture.
Historically, Amalfi grew as a maritime republic, asserting its naval authority across the Mediterranean. The Arsenale della Repubblica remains a reminder of this era, serving as the site where ships were once built to maintain dominance over trade routes. Following the period of the maritime republic, the town shifted under the rule of the Normans, transitioning through various administrative roles as a comune. The weight of this history is felt in the narrow, winding passageways that suggest a city designed for defense and commerce rather than comfort.
Today, the local economy pivots on its heritage and its unique position in Campania. The town functions as a hub for visitors, anchored by the enduring presence of the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea, which presides over the central square with its distinctive striped facade. While the sea dictates the rhythm of the port at Marina Coppola, the inland areas remain focused on traditional crafts, particularly the production of paper, which continues in the vicinity of the Valle dei Mulini. The local trade is a quiet continuation of ancient labor, marked by the steady flow of water and the movement of goods.
Cultural life in Amalfi is inseparable from its history of maritime innovation and its artistic legacy. The Museo della Bussola e del Ducato Marinaro di Amalfi explores the navigational advancements that once connected this coast to distant lands, while the Chiostro del Paradiso provides a quiet space of marble columns and enclosed gardens. The presence of the Riserva Naturale Orientata Valle delle Ferriere offers a different perspective, highlighting the natural environment that sustains the area. Life moves with the tides and the seasonal shifts of the sun across the cliffside, maintaining a focus on the tangible remnants of its past.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
