SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.

Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

About Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region defined by the white limestone of the Carso and the sharp, cold bora wind that scours its plateaus. From the Julian Alps down to the Adriatic, the land shifts from mountainous terrain to the gentle slopes of the Collio vineyards. Slovene and Friulian languages appear alongside Italian on signs, marking the border identity of the region. Visitors find the landscape shaped by the sea in Trieste and the inland plains around Udine, Pordenone, and Gorizia.

Trieste retains the character of a former Habsburg port, looking out over the water where the Arco di Riccardo and the Canal Grande di Trieste define its urban rhythm. In the city, the Cattedrale di San Giusto di San Giusto Martire and the Castello di Miramare overlook the harbour, while the Chiesa di San Spiridione remains a fixture of the daily commute. The air here holds a distinct, salt-heavy chill that settles over the stone facades as the sun begins to set behind the docks.

In Udine, the Castello di Udine dominates the skyline, overlooking the Loggia del Lionello and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Maggiore. The city functions as a hub for the surrounding countryside, with Casa Cavazzini and the Chiesa di San Giacomo serving as centers of community life. Further west, Pordenone balances its industrial roots with the Castello di Torre and the Cattedrale di San Marco. The Museo Archeologico del Friuli Occidentale preserves the history of the plains, while the Convento di San Francesco offers a quiet space amid the busy streets.

Gorizia, situated near the border, carries the weight of a frontier town. The Castello di Gorizia and the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio mark the skyline, while the Duomo di Sant'Ilario e Taziano stands near the Palazzo Attems Petzenstein. Nearby, Monte Calvario serves as a reminder of the military history that scarred these rocks during the twentieth century. The region remains a place of marble and textiles, where the memory of wartime trenches still cuts into the hard earth, and the scent of San Daniele ham lingers in the kitchens of the small towns.

About This Friuli-Venezia Giulia Map Page / Informazioni su questa pagina

Explore Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 46.083, 13.1149. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to each of the 4 province of the region and to 1,491 place maps.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.

There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
