SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Lazio.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Lazio stretches from the volcanic lakes of Bolsena and Bracciano to the Tyrrhenian coast. Its landscape is defined by umbrella pines, travertine stone, and aqueduct arches crossing the campagna. The region comprises the provinces of Viterbo, Rieti, Latina, Frosinone, and Roma. Across its territory, sheep graze on drove roads that predate the city of Rome itself. In the north, Etruscan tombs are carved directly into the tufa, while the Sabine hills rise toward the east. This is a land where the light hits the ancient brick of Ostia with a particular, pale intensity.
Roma stands at the center of the region, housing the Basilica di San Pietro and the Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura. Further landmarks include the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, and the Ara Pacis Augustae. While Roma dominates the economy and political life, other towns like Latina, Guidonia Montecelio, and Fiumicino anchor the surrounding provinces. Latina features the Giardini di Ninfa and the Castello Caetani di Sermoneta, alongside the Museo Civico Duilio Cambellotti and the Cattedrale di San Marco. Piana delle Orme provides a somber reflection on the history of the reclaimed marshes.
Guidonia Montecelio sits among the limestone ridges, home to the Mausoleo dei Plauzi and the Riserva Naturale Macchia di Gattaceca e Macchia del Barco. The local churches, such as the Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista and the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo in Marco Simone, mark the rhythm of daily life. Near the sea, Fiumicino maintains the Porto di Traiano and the Necropoli di Porto, alongside the Riserva Naturale Statale Litorale Romano. The air here tastes of salt and pine resin, lingering over the Chiesa di Sant'Ippolito all'Isola Sacra and the Chiesa di Santa Maria Porto della Salute.
The history of Lazio is a sequence of roles: a Roman heartland, a contested frontier, and the center of the Papal States. It has served as a crucible for the unification of Italy, a process that demanded heavy sacrifices from its rural population. Today, the economy relies on administration, tourism, and agriculture, blending the modern sprawl of Viterbo, Pomezia, Anzio, Tivoli, and Velletri with ancient traditions. The region remains a place where the weight of the past is not a burden but a presence, felt in the quiet persistence of its towns and the enduring structure of its landscape.

Explore Lazio, Italy, Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 41.9634, 12.9033. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to each of the 5 province of the region and to 2,947 place maps.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
