SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Bari.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Città metropolitana of Bari stretches across a landscape of flat limestone and red earth, defined by the relentless wind off the Adriatic. Ancient olive trees, older than the towns they surround, stand as silent witnesses to a history carved by Greek influence, Roman administration, and the strategic weight of a maritime republic. The province encompasses forty-one comuni, ranging from the bustling port of Bari to the inland heights of Altamura and the stone-hewn streets of Molfetta. Drystone walls segment the fields, catching a light that is sharp and crystalline, turning the whitewash of the villages into a brilliant, blinding contrast against the pale rock.
Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons and the demands of a territory once fought over as a vital frontier. In the city of Bari, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas and the Norman-Swabian Castle reflect a legacy of power and pilgrimage, while the Archaeological Museum of Santa Scolastica preserves fragments of a deep, layered antiquity. Near the centre, the land rises toward the summit of Monte Purgano, while the valleys of Macchia di Marcello offer shelter from the open plains. The Botanical Garden of the University of Bari provides a quiet refuge, far removed from the intensity of the urban grid and the constant, rhythmic movement of the Adriatic coast.
Economic life in the province balances the modern demands of industry with the deep-rooted traditions of the interior. In Altamura, the legacy of the Middle Ages remains etched in the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption and the defensive strength of the Bari Gate, while the Grotta di Lamalunga speaks to a geological history that precedes all human endeavour. Molfetta, with its historic Porto di Molfetta and the ancient Cattedrale di San Corrado, maintains a profound connection to the sea. Whether exploring the archaeological treasures of Palazzo Baldassarre or the quiet corners of the Pulo di Altamura, the visitor finds a region shaped by the interplay of stone, salt, and time.
Explore Bari, Apulia (Puglia), Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 40.9812, 16.8496. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Metropolitan City of Bari and to 148 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
