Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Province of Taranto, identified by the vehicle code TA, sits as a bridge between the Ionian waters and the rugged limestone plateaus of Puglia. This land, once a prominent Greek colony known for its maritime dominance, carries the weight of a history shaped by the Roman era and subsequent centuries of territorial shifts. The landscape is defined by the red earth and the persistent wind from the sea, where ancient olive trees stand amidst drystone walls. From the coast at Punta Penna to the inland elevations of Monte Castello and Costa del Guardiano, the terrain transitions from coastal basins to the deep, weathered incisions of Gravina Gennarini and Gravina Leucaspide. It is a region where the light sharpens the edges of the stone, casting long shadows across the valley floors of Contrada Pantano.
In the city of Taranto, the legacy of its past remains visible in the stone of the Castello Aragonese and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Taranto (MArTA). The urban fabric is punctuated by the Chiesa di San Domenico Maggiore and the Tempio di Poseidon, structures that have witnessed the slow rhythm of the city’s maritime life. Nearby, the Giardini Peripato offer a quiet refuge, while the Palazzo Pantaleo and the Convento di San Pasquale reflect the architectural layering of the province. Further out, the Parco della Rimembranza provides a green contrast to the industrial hum that has historically defined the economy of the provincial capital, balancing the demands of modernity with the stubborn survival of its classical foundations.
Beyond the capital, the province extends into distinct centers such as Martina Franca, Massafra, and Grottaglie. In Martina Franca, the Basilica di San Martino and the Palazzo Ducale dominate the skyline, their baroque facades contrasting with the simplicity of the Porta di Santo Stefano. Massafra reveals a different character, marked by the Castello di Massafra and the rock-hewn sites of the Cripta di San Leonardo and Cripta di San Marco. The protected environments of the Riserva Naturale Regionale Orientata Palude la Vela and the Parco Naturale Regionale Terra delle Gravine safeguard the natural diversity of the region. Whether exploring the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Stair or walking near Molo San Cataldo, the visitor encounters a land defined by its resilience and its enduring stone.

Coordinates: 40.4904, 17.3054. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Taranto and to 110 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
