Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Catania sits as a coastal comune within the autonomous region of Sicilia, defined by the volcanic silhouette of Monte Etna on the horizon. The landscape transitions from the salt-aired Porto di Catania toward the rolling Piana di Catania, while the heights of Monte Santa Sofia and Monte Po overlook the urban grid. Beyond the city, the Riserva Naturale Oasi del Simeto offers a protected expanse of water and reed beds, contrasting with the inland reaches of the Ponte Barca reservoir. The air here holds a distinct sharpness, carrying the scent of the sea and the dry heat rising from the volcanic soil.
Historically, this city evolved through distinct phases, beginning as a Roman colonia before falling under the influence of Norman rule. It functioned as a significant port, navigating the shifts of power through the centuries as a comune and later under the authority of the Bourbon crown. The urban fabric reflects these transitions, particularly in the structural remains of the Roman Theatre of Catania and the imposing presence of the Ursino Castle. These sites mark the city's endurance, having survived seismic shifts and the changing tides of Mediterranean governance that defined its development as a major administrative centre.
Economically, the city serves as a hub for the wider region, balancing its historical role as a maritime gateway with contemporary trade and industry. The presence of the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena highlights the scale of its institutional history, while the bustling port reflects its ongoing connection to wider shipping routes. Life here maintains a steady rhythm, tied to the movement of goods and the cultivation of the surrounding lands. The city provides a focal point for the province of Catania, anchoring the economy of this autonomous region through its commerce and regional administrative functions.
Cultural life centres around institutions like the Museo Belliniano, which honours the composer, and the verdant spaces of the Giardino Bellini. The Cattedrale di Sant'Agata stands as a central figure in the city's daily life, its architecture grounding the historic centre. Locals gather in areas like the Via Crociferi, where the stone facades catch the intense light of the Sicilian afternoon. This environment fosters a particular intensity, where the weight of history is felt in the texture of the lava stone buildings, yet the city remains fully engaged in its modern daily routines.

Explore Catania, Sicily (Sicilia), Italy, with an embedded Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Coordinates: 37.508726, 15.073378. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. Alternate and historic names for this place are given in the table above.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
