SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Ragusa.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Ragusa, a Libero consorzio di comuni in the autonomous region of Sicilia, is defined by the stark beauty of its tufa baroque architecture. The province stretches from the rugged inland heights of Monte Renna and Serra del Vento to the southern coast where Scicli and Donnalucata overlook the sea. The landscape is carved by the Fiume Irminio and the Fiume di Sperlinga, while the valley of Contrada Cimillà lies close by. The light here is sharp and unrelenting, casting long shadows across the wheat fields and the silver leaves of olive groves, a remnant of a land that once served as a Greek colony and later thrived under Norman influence.
Life in the province centers around twelve comuni, with major urban hubs like Ragusa, Vittoria, and Modica anchoring the economy. In Ragusa, the Belvedere di Ragusa Ibla offers a view of the city’s intricate layout, marked by the Duomo di San Giorgio and the Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale. Vittoria houses the Basilica di San Giovanni Battista and the Castello Colonna, while Modica is dominated by the Castello dei Conti and the Duomo di San Pietro. These stone structures, built after the devastating earthquake of the seventeenth century, stand as testaments to the resilience of a region that has navigated the complex shifts of Mediterranean history.
Beyond the towns, the countryside is a mosaic of reservoirs like Santa Rosalia and protected areas such as the Riserva Naturale Pino d'Aleppo. The proximity of the Giardino Ibleo and the Castello di Donnafugata provides a respite from the intensity of the sun. The economy remains tethered to the land, where the cultivation of crops and the preservation of traditions define the rhythm of the day. From the Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory in Ragusa to the Church of Saint John the Evangelist in Modica, the architecture invites a quiet contemplation of a past that is both visible and deeply felt in the stillness of the afternoon.

Coordinates: 36.9129, 14.696. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Ragusa and to 157 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
