Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The Libero consorzio di comuni of Trapani sits on the western edge of Sicilia, a land defined by the salt-heavy air and the harsh, bright light that reflects off the Saline di Trapani e Paceco. This province serves as a frontier between the Mediterranean and the African horizon, a place where history is etched into the limestone of the Castello della Colombaia and the ancient masonry of the Porta Garibaldi. The landscape is marked by the proximity of the Timpone Summarriri and Timpone Nasco, where the terrain shifts from the coastal salt marshes to the rugged inland ridges. Life here is tied to the rhythm of the sea and the soil, shaped by a history of Phoenician influence and later Roman dominion, leaving behind the enduring structures of the Chiesa del Purgatorio and the Museo Regionale Agostino Pepoli.
Agriculture and maritime industry define the economic pulse of the region, from the wine-heavy plains near Marsala to the salt-harvesting traditions of Trapani. The local economy draws strength from the sea, where the Fiumara Mazaro meets the coast, and from the legacy of trade that once linked these ports to the wider Mediterranean. In towns like Mazara del Vallo, the presence of the Museo del Satiro Danzante and the Cattedrale del Santissimo Salvatore reflects a cultural blending that survived the shifts of medieval kingdoms and the eventual unification of Italy. This unification brought both promise and the heavy cost of economic displacement, yet the resilience of the local community remains woven into the daily work of the fields and the harbours.
The geography of the territory is a study in contrasts, ranging from the protected stretches of the Palude Costiera di Capo Feto to the elevated paths near the Portella Sottana. While the urban centers like Alcamo and Castelvetrano hold the weight of administrative life, the wider countryside is defined by the flow of the Fiume della Marcanzotta and the distant silhouette of Monte Cofano. Visitors find a place where the architecture of the Palazzo della Giudecca stands alongside the quiet expanse of the Contrada Mandre Rosse. It is a region that keeps its secrets in the shadow of the Erice peaks, moving slowly through the seasons as it has since the time of the Greek colonies and the subsequent centuries of royal rule.
Explore Trapani, Sicily (Sicilia), Italy, with a Google street and satellite map — switch between the two with the buttons on the map. Street View gives a ground-level view along the roads. Coordinates: 37.8348, 12.6935. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Trapani and to 216 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
