SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Arezzo.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Arezzo sits in the heart of Tuscany, defined by a landscape where cypress lines march across clay hills and vines grow in ruled rows. The province is anchored by the Fiume Arno and the Valdarno Superiore, while the skyline is marked by the distant heights of Monte Falterona. The territory encompasses thirty-six comuni, with major centers like Arezzo, Montevarchi, and Cortona anchoring the local economy. Beyond the bustling town squares, the land holds the protected area of Ponte a Buriano e Penna and the quiet woods of the Bosco di Sargiano, offering a respite from the agricultural rhythm that has long sustained these communities.
Historically, the province served as a crucial frontier, shaped by its Roman foundations and the influence of powerful dynasties. In Arezzo, one finds the Anfiteatro Romano and the Basilica di San Francesco, while Montevarchi preserves history within the Museo Paleontologico and the Palazzo del Podestà. Cortona stands high above the valley, its character forged by the Eremo delle Celle and the Fortezza del Girifalco. These cities reflect a legacy of enduring stone and artistic heritage, where the morning light catches the Renaissance architecture of the Palazzo Pretorio and the intricate details of the local churches.
Life in this province moves with the seasons, from the labor of the olive harvest to the quiet persistence of the valley towns. Whether near the Invaso della Penna or the slopes of Monte Caporali, the air carries a specific weight, smelling of damp earth and woodsmoke. The region has transitioned from its ancient roles as a strategic outpost to a modern landscape of industry and craft. Today, the residents of towns like Sansepolcro and Bibbiena continue a daily cycle that balances the preservation of their historic landmarks with the realities of modern life in the Tuscan countryside.

This hub links to every comune in the Province of Arezzo and to 688 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
