SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Pistoia.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The province of Pistoia occupies a distinct portion of the Tuscan landscape, stretching from the plains toward the shadows of the Monti di Casore and the Poggio di Colondole. The light here catches the stone of the Battistero di San Giovanni in Corte and the Cattedrale di San Zeno, grounding the city in its medieval reality as a frontier town once fought over by rival powers. Beyond the urban centre, the land is marked by the Torrente Ombrone and the distant, cooling presence of the Fiume Reno. The air holds a particular clarity, moving from the industrial rhythms of towns like Quarrata, where Villa La Magia sits in the quiet countryside, to the thermal legacy of Monsummano Terme, home to the Grotta Giusti Terme.
Historically, this area functioned as a vital hub within the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, evolving from a Roman settlement into a medieval commune of strategic importance. Its economy transitioned from agriculture to the specialized textile and nursery trades that define its modern character. The landscape is not merely scenic but functional, with the Padule di Fucecchio serving as a vital ecosystem far from the industrial outskirts. Near the city, the park of Villone Puccini provides a green lung, while the heights of the Valle del Vincio di Montagna define the horizon. The architecture, including the Church of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas, reflects a rigorous aesthetic that rejects decorative excess for structural honesty.
Life in the province remains tethered to the rhythm of the seasons and the demands of the land. Whether in the shadow of the Fortezza di Santa Barbara or near the reservoirs of Giudea a Gello, there is a tangible sense of purpose in the daily movement of the inhabitants. This is a region that has endured the shifting borders of regional conflicts and the pressures of unification, emerging as a place of deliberate industry. From the Museo Civico di Pistoia to the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Fontenuova, the built environment serves as a map of communal memory, keeping the history of the province firmly rooted in its actual geography.

Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
