SEARCH MAPS. The green 🔍 Search Maps button below the map opens a second, independent map on OpenStreetMap coverage of the whole country. Its search box finds any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name, so you are not limited to Siena.
Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

The province of Siena, located in the heart of Tuscany, is defined by its rolling landscape of clay hills and cypress lines. The terrain is marked by the Torrente Arbia and the Fiume Ombrone, while the distant, imposing silhouette of Monte Amiata anchors the horizon. Historically, this territory functioned as a contested frontier between powerful city-states, leaving behind a legacy of fortified hill towns and medieval structures. The air here carries a distinct, dry clarity, particularly as evening light settles over the exposed badlands of the Crete Senesi, where the soil reflects the changing sun with a muted, earthy intensity.
Siena serves as the administrative center, a city built on ancient foundations with landmarks like the Cattedrale Metropolitana di Santa Maria Assunta and the Complesso Museale Santa Maria della Scala. Nearby, Poggibonsi preserves its heritage through sites such as the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale and the Badia a Isola. In Colle di Val d'Elsa, the Museo del Cristallo reflects a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship. These towns, once independent communes, now anchor a region where the economy balances agricultural production—notably vines and olives—with the preservation of a dense, Renaissance-era architectural fabric that remains in daily use.
Life in the province follows the rhythm of the seasons, from the heat of the summer harvest to the quiet work in the oak woods of Chianti. Beyond the urban centers, the landscape features natural spaces like the Basso Merse and the Riserva Naturale Montecellesi, offering a counterpoint to the orderly, human-made geometries of the fields. Whether near the water of the Lago di Gragli or along the ridges of Poggio Cipresso, the province maintains a balance between its protected wild areas and its cultivated valleys. It is a place where the weight of history is felt not in museums, but in the stone of the Porta Nova and the persistent, quiet endurance of the rural villages.

Coordinates: 43.1827, 11.4953. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. Local and world news feeds keep the page current, and the bilingual description is written from the data this site holds rather than copied from elsewhere. This hub links to every comune in the Province of Siena and to 493 place maps in the provincia.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
