Reading the map like an IGM sheet. Click Grid to lay a labelled UTM grid over the map, quoted along the edges the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it — at normal zoom the squares are one kilometre across, so a six-figure reference can be read by eye and distance judged straight off the map. Click Measure and tap two points for the distance between them with the grid, true and magnetic bearings, the last being the one to set on a compass.
Click 📍 My position for a single GPS fix. It marks where you are and reports it as Gauss-Boaga (the grid printed on the IGM Carta d'Italia), as ETRS89 / UTM (the grid Italy uses today), and as plain latitude and longitude, with a copy button so it can be pasted into a message. It takes one reading and stops, to save the battery. Map tiles need mobile coverage; a GPS reading does not — so the grid reference stays correct in the Apennines and the Alps, where the map itself often will not load.

Trentino-Alto Adige is an autonomous region defined by its rugged verticality. The Dolomites rise into sharp, pale towers that turn a soft, bruised pink as the sun slips behind them. Below, the valley floors are laid out in rows of apple orchards, while larch and spruce climb the slopes toward high pastures and their quiet malghe. The air is thin and sharp, carrying the scent of cut grass and cold stone. German is heard in the kitchens and seen on the signs alongside Italian, reflecting a frontier identity. It is a land where onion domes on Habsburg churches oversee local life, and the light feels crystalline, hitting the Vinschgau terraces with a precision that makes every shadow seem deliberate and heavy.
Historically, this region was a Roman province that later became a contested frontier, shifting between influences that shaped its architecture and social fabric. It was integrated into the Austro-Hungarian sphere before the unification of Italy, a transition that brought significant political and human costs. The territory remains split into the provinces of Bolzano and Trento, each maintaining its specific administration. The region functioned as a strategic gateway through the Alps, a role that dictated its development from a feudal duchy to its present status as a region with special autonomy. Here, the history is not a collection of anecdotes but a physical presence found in the stones of old walls.
In Trento, the Cattedrale di San Vigilio and the Castello del Buonconsiglio anchor the urban center, while the Belvedere di Sardagna offers a wide perspective of the valley. Nearby, the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore and the quiet Castel Toblino reflect the local style. Bolzano presents a different rhythm, centered on the Chiesa dei Domenicani and the Chiesa dei Francescani, with the Funivia del Colle connecting the town to the heights. Castel Mareccio and Castel Roncolo guard the perimeter, their structures standing against the wind. The daily movement in these cities is measured and composed, lacking the frantic energy found in the lower plains of the south.
Merano and Rovereto hold their own distinct characters. In Merano, the Giardini di Castel Trauttmantdorff provide a contrast to the height of the Torre delle Polveri and the history of Castel Tirolo and the Castello Principesco. The Passeggiata Tappeiner remains a preferred route for the slow observation of the town. Rovereto is marked by the Castello di Rovereto and the solemn resonance of the Campana dei Caduti. The Eremo di San Colombano sits in quiet isolation, while the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero and the Chiesa Arcipretale di San Marco suggest a city that balances its past with a focused, deliberate engagement with its own cultural footprint.
Merano e Rovereto mantengono caratteri distinti.

Coordinates: 46.3389, 11.2487. Place names, the comune and provincia hierarchy and the population come from Istat: the administrative boundaries of 1 January 2026 and the 2021 census of inhabited localities. This hub links to each of the 2 province of the region and to 1,607 place maps.
Search Maps opens a second, independent map. It searches OpenStreetMap for any Italian comune, frazione, mountain or landmark by name; overlays a labelled UTM grid quoted the way a printed IGM 1:25 000 tavoletta quotes it; measures distance with grid, true and magnetic bearings between any two points; and takes a single GPS fix reporting your position as a Gauss-Boaga reference, as ETRS89 / UTM, and as latitude and longitude. Map tiles need mobile coverage, but a GPS position does not, so the grid reference stays correct where the map cannot load.
There is no topographic layer on these pages. The Istituto Geografico Militare serves its Carta d'Italia only inside the EU, so an Italian equivalent of the 1:25 000 walking sheet cannot be shown here — the UTM grid over OpenStreetMap is what stands in its place.
