Ancient heavy clays and the encroaching reach of the Weald define the low-lying terrain of Alfold. It lies 7.5 miles south-south-east of Godalming (from Godalming: bearing 146°T, OS grid TQ 038 339), and is situated north-north-east of Alfold Bars village. The parish church of St Nicholas preserves fragments of thirteenth-century masonry, standing as a weathered anchor against the slow shifting of the seasons. To the west, the canopy of Sidney Wood offers a dense, silent corridor of timber that has watched the parish boundaries remain largely unchanged for centuries. The Wey and Arun Canal snakes through the northern periphery, its stagnant, reed-fringed waters reflecting a sky that often feels vast and grey above the flat horizon. Here, the damp earth holds a quiet, stubborn memory of the glass-making furnaces that once burned in the surrounding woodland. Alfold maintains a reserved composure, indifferent to the hurried transit of modern traffic on the nearby A281. The quality of light across these fields possesses a thin, metallic clarity, particularly when winter frost clings to the furrowed soil of the farmland.
