Chilworth emerges from the Tilling Bourne valley as a place defined by the quiet industry of its past and the persistent encroachment of the Surrey Hills. It lies 2.4 miles south-east of Guildford (from Guildford: bearing 138°T, OS grid TQ 021 470), and is situated north-west of Blackheath village. The remnants of the Chilworth Gunpowder Works remain scattered along the stream, where moss-covered brick walls and silent sluices mark the site of a volatile, centuries-old trade. Light filters thinly through the trees here, catching the dark water that once powered the grinding mills and separated the village from the outside world. To the north, the steep incline of St Martha's Hill rises sharply, its summit bearing the ancient, lonely silhouette of a church that watches over the lowlands. Chilworth carries a certain gravity in its topography, where the heavy damp of the valley floor contrasts with the exposed, wind-swept ridges above. The earth holds the memory of black powder and labour, yet the modern eye finds only the stillness of woodland and the patient endurance of stone. Chilworth remains anchored to this transition between the industrial shadow and the high, open expanse of the North Downs.
