St Ann's Hill rises as a wooded promontory above the flat, water-meadowed expanse of the Surrey landscape. It lies 1.2 miles west-north-west of Chertsey (from Chertsey: bearing 284°T, OS grid TQ 023 673), and is situated south-south-east of Thorpe village. Sunlight filters through the dense canopy of St Ann's Hill and The Dingle, where the air holds the cool, damp stillness of ancient, undisturbed earth. High upon the summit, the remnants of the Large Univallate Hillfort and 14th Century Chapel at St Ann's Hill mark a boundary between the modern world and the silent, iron-age ghosts of the past. These earthworks catch the low evening light, casting long, sharp shadows across the grassy ramparts that guard the high ground. Below, the ground slopes toward the gravel-rich lowlands where the reflection of the sky shimmers upon the surface of nearby waters. Modern architectural ambition asserts itself nearby at the Grade II* listed St Ann's Court, a stark, circular contrast to the rugged, timbered slopes that define the topography. St Ann's Hill remains a place where the heavy, quiet breath of the forest meets the structured precision of human history.
