About Allgreave, Cheshire

Allgreave emerges from the rugged topography of Cheshire as a collection of dwellings defined by the high, exposed contours of the southern Pennines. It lies 5.5 miles south-east of Macclesfield (from Macclesfield: bearing 140°T, OS grid SJ 973 669), and is situated north-east of Rushton Spencer village. Sheltered by the expansive embrace of the Peak District National Park, Allgreave endures the persistent shifting of mountain light that turns the surrounding gritstone into shades of bruised plum and charcoal. To the east, the twin silhouettes of Allgreave Hill and Midgley Hill rise as silent sentinels, their slopes holding the memory of ancient glacial movements. Beneath these heights, the land drops away toward the verdant hollows of Bartomley Bottoms, where the air retains a cool, damp stillness long after the sun has breached the horizon. Stone walls snake across the moorland in a rough, grey geometry, dividing the pastures into a patchwork that has remained largely unchanged for generations. The quietude here is not an absence of sound, but a heavy presence, punctuated only by the sudden, sharp call of curlews navigating the upland winds. In this high, austere landscape, the architecture of Allgreave remains tethered to the earth, built from the very rock upon which it resides.
