About Pendrift, Cornwall

Granite outcrops and the persistent, low-slung light of the Cornish moor define the character of Pendrift. It lies 4.8 miles north-north-east of Bodmin (from Bodmin: bearing 19°T, OS grid SX 100 741), and is situated north of Blisland village. Rugged slopes rise sharply toward The Beacon, where the wind scours the gorse and leaves the air tasting of salt and cold stone. Pendrift exists in a quiet dialogue with the earth, marked by the ancient, weathered presence of the Medieval Wayside Cross at Blisland nearby. To the north, the De Lank Quarries SSSI reveal the deep, grey bones of the land, once pried open to feed the appetite of Victorian architects. These hollows hold rain like darkened mirrors, reflecting a sky that shifts rapidly from bruised violet to a pale, clinical blue. Pendrift maintains a sparse, solitary grace, shielded from the restlessness of the coast by miles of untamed, elevated terrain. The silence here is heavy, broken only by the sharp, rhythmic cry of a raven circling above the granite tors.
