About Beanthwaite, Cumbria

Beanthwaite emerges from the rugged topography of the Furness peninsula as a collection of quiet stone dwellings that hold the morning light against the shadows of the southern fells. It lies 2.7 miles south-east of Broughton in Furness (from Broughton in Furness: bearing 127°T, OS grid SD 247 848), and is situated east-south-east of Grizebeck village. The land here slopes with a deliberate, muscular grace, shaped by the ancient forces that carved the valleys of this Cumbrian fringe. To the north-east, the dark, reflective surface of Burney Tarn catches the sky, mirroring clouds that drift over the high ground with a slow, wandering indifference. A short distance to the west, the waters of Grize Beck run clear and cold over slate beds, carrying the runoff from the higher slopes toward the sea. Beanthwaite remains a place where the weather dictates the pace of the day, as mist often clings to the rising ground before dissolving into the pale, thin sun. The architecture speaks of a hard-won endurance, with thick walls fashioned from local rock that seem to have grown directly from the earth itself. Every path leading away from Beanthwaite invites a long, solitary walk through the damp bracken and gorse that define this spare, unadorned corner of England.
